Octave’s State of Mind Report: A Closer Look at Mental Health in NYC
At Octave, we believe that better care starts with better understanding. That’s why we created our first-ever State of Mind Report: New York City Edition, to shed light on how New Yorkers are really doing, and how we can continue to meet their needs with thoughtful, personalized care.
Between January 2023 and June 2025, we analyzed anonymous intake data from therapy seekers across all five boroughs. What we found underscores both the urgency and the opportunity for mental health support in a city as unique and fast-paced as New York.
What We Learned About Mental Health in NYC
The Burnout Borough: Brooklyn residents are doing the most, with more than 6% reporting burnout.
A Cloud Over Queens: 20% of Queens residents reported experiencing depression.
Anxiety Among Women: Across the city, 1 in 3 women are seeking therapy for anxiety.
Depression Across Genders: 15% of both men and women in NYC reported symptoms of depression, highlighting a widespread need for support.
These numbers represent more than just statistics; they reflect real people navigating real challenges. For us, this data is a call to action to keep evolving our care model and meeting New Yorkers where they are.
Why This Matters
As our Head of Clinical Care, Golee Abrishami, PhD, put it:
“This report gives us a snapshot of how New Yorkers are really doing, and let’s just say, the city that never sleeps could use a nap. Burnout, anxiety, and depression are front and center. While more people are reaching out for help, many are still silently struggling. This report aims to remind people they’re not alone, even in a city of 8 million.”
At Octave, we see these findings as both a reminder and a responsibility: a reminder that mental health challenges are widespread, and a responsibility to continue breaking down barriers to care.
