This is a support group for new parents to children from birth to 1 year. All are welcome in terms of sexual orientation, gender identity, and path to parenthood. We will discuss topics relevant to the joys and challenges of having a new baby, particularly in terms of self-care, relationships, parenting, and decision-making.
Every session will start with a “check in” (i.e., how each group member is feeling today, highlights from the past week, anything they would like the group to discuss) and end with a relaxation/breathing exercise, including a handout that members can use to practice at home. The bulk of the group will be spent on one or more discussion topics from a list generated by surveying the group members themselves. In addition, at the first session, each member will choose a “support person” in the group with whom they will exchange contact information to enhance their sense of connectedness between sessions.
Potential discussion topics:
Path to parenthood
Newborn challenges (sleep, feeding, health)
Symptoms/red flags for Postpartum Distress (incl depression & anxiety)
Maintaining healthy relationships
Managing emotions
Physical recovery & Body Image concerns (for those who carried child)
Sex & Intimacy
Decisions about work
Expectations of self as a parent
Impact of COVID on parenting and childcare concerns
Relaxation strategies
This group requires a consultation prior to enrollment. Please follow the link below if you are interested in joining this group, and a member of our team will reach out to set up a consultation.
