Saying Hello To San Francisco

When buzzing through a sped-up world where there are always battles to be won and emails to be answered, learning to slow down during the workday is imperative to both our productivity and happiness. We recognize that you're busy and we also recognize that helping you identify what’s best for you and helping you translate these truths into everyday routines are two very different things. Therefore, we’ve decided to pull together a collection of our favorite local escapes to help you slow down and step away from it all.

From parks and paths to cafes and art galleries, all of these places have brought calm to our day. It is here that we make an effort to savor the hours and minutes rather than counting them…to focus on the important things that need time, such as friends, family, hobbies and rest — to do everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible.

We hope you enjoy them just as much as we do.

Yo También Cantina

Café

A beautiful cafe off the beaten path filled with cactuses and beautiful ceramics. They work closely with Full Belly Farm and cook with organic and local produce. Their food combines traditional flavors of Venezuelan and tropical cuisine with seasonal California ingredients, resulting in a vibrant cooking style that they have come to define as: “Tropical-Local.”

Green Apple Books & Music

Bookstore

Richard Savoy founded Green Apple Books in 1967 at 25 years old. With a deep love of the written word, some savings, and a credit union loan, he got a lease in a pre-1906 Richmond district building near the corner of Clement Street and Sixth Avenue. His stock of used books, comics, and National Geographic magazines attracted a following in the neighborhood, one that continued to grow over the next 52 years.

Greens

Restaurant

With an unparalleled view of the bay under the Golden Gate Bridge and vegetarian fare sourced from farms in Marin, Greens is the quintessential San Francisco experience. Special enough for an occasion yet relaxed enough to pop in on a whim, Greens never fails to deliver a fantastic meal that’s gourmet yet refreshingly unpretentious.

Onsen

Bathhouse

Inspired by Japanese bathing culture, our intimate space provides a restful environment to escape from daily routines. We are more akin to a Japanese sento, where neighbors soak together, chat about what's going on in their lives and take space for themselves to enjoy the restorative quality of soaking in a hot water bath.

The Roof Garden at One Kearny

Enter the building at 23 Geary Street and take the elevator to the 11th floor. When the doors open, a 2,500-square-foot penthouse park with manicured bushes, benches and downtown views awaits. Bring your lunch or a good book and let the stress of the day melt away.

343 Sansome Roof Garden

Public Space

Enter the lobby at 343 Sansome Street and take the elevator up to the 15th floor to find the rooftop deck. It has tables and chairs, benches, charming olive trees and ledge seating along granite planters. Located in the busy heart of the Financial District, this sun-flooded terrace is a truly hidden spot known only by local workers who stop by in their breaks to eat lunch and catch some rays. The terrace also offers a nice view of the surrounding buildings.

General Store

Backyard Garden

A magical outpost where locally made planters, indigo mud cloths, silkscreened lunar calendars, and carved walnut coffee drippers rule. Step out back and you’ll want to move to Outer Sunset too: The weather-beaten table in the succulent-and-herb-filled garden is the perfect place to spend an afternoon. Before or after, be sure to grab a coffee and a slice of toast at Trouble Coffee or head over to Outerlands for a meal.

Batteries To Bluffs

Walking Trail

A short but majestic route with a side of expansive ocean views that snakes along the Presidio’s wild western shoreline. The two trailheads at Lincoln Boulevard offer an elevated view of the Pacific Ocean horizon, with the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands to the northwest, and the dramatic bluffs tumbling to the rocky shore below. We highly recommend taking a sunset hike for the ultimate experience, but even on a foggy day, this trail makes for a memorable journey.

Tank Hill at Sunrise

Walking Trail

Just beyond Twin Peaks is another little hill, tucked into a beautiful San Francisco neighborhood. While our favorite time of day here is sunrise, this hidden gem will always provide a gorgeous view of downtown San Francisco, Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Ocean Beach at Sunset

Beach

Ocean Beach is a long beach spanning the entire Sunset District of San Francisco from Cliff House south to Sloat Boulevard. Like all the beaches along the coast in San Francisco, Ocean Beach is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Esplanade is superb for walking and bonfires are allowed in fire rings which are provided between stairwells 15 through 20. Be sure to dress warm, grab your beverage of choice and watch the sunset.

Interior Greenbelt

Walking Trail

The Interior Greenbelt is located on Mt. Sutro, south of Golden Gate Park and north of Twin Peaks. This park is almost entirely covered by blue gum eucalyptus forest. Small remnant native plant populations exist here in the understory, including three locally sensitive plants species: sweet cicely, fairy bells, and thimbleberry. There is also an old creek bed that carries water through the park at times during the rainy season.
